Background:
Every year there are approximately 8000 reportable injuries
involving lift trucks, which create suffering for those involved,
they also involve a heavy cost on the employers business.
Even where an incident does not involve injury, may result
in costly damage to equipment, buildings fittings and goods.
Lift truck accidents are frequently associated with a lack
of suitable and efficient operator training, such training
is an essential first step in reducing damage & injury.
To comply with their duties under the Provision and Use of
Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and general duties
under the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974, employers
must ensure that all operators they employ, both new and existing,
are adequately trained and when necessary provide for their
additional or refresher training.
Training Provision:
All training courses are designed
to meet the requirements of the Code of Practice (L117) approved
by the Health & Safety Commission and help operators and
supervisors use trucks with safety & efficiency. All courses
are carried out by fully accredited instructors and on completion
successful candidates will be issued with relevant certification.
Training can be conducted at a number of accredited training
centres, which offers a flexible solution to business or private
customers and minimises workplace or operational disruption.
Many Customers prefer the ‘on site’ training
option, where staff are trained on the equipment they will
actually be using and a total of 3 trainees of similar ability
may be trained simultaneously. Where this option is chosen
the following administrative points must be addressed prior
to any training conduct:
Availability of serviceable equipment, for the duration of
the training.
Segregation of a training area from the main working area.
Provision of suitable loads for training purposes.
Access to a room in which theory sessions and tests can be
conducted.
Uninterrupted attendance by all trainees for the duration
of training.
Working in partnership with the customer, courses can be
designed to incorporate any specific operational requirements
identified during the consultation process, when a Training
Needs Analysis will be conducted. During this process, customer
input is essential to guarantee both maximum benefits and
cost effective results.
